COUNTY: Republicans missed an opportunity

The Pierce County Council’s appointment of Kevin McCann as a judge in District Court is a missed opportunity by county Republicans to garner votes from conservatives in the black community by appointing Karl Williams to the bench.

For context, I will mention that I am black and conservative. I know many black conservatives who identify themselves as Democrats, but vote in favor of conservative issues. They don’t vote for conservative candidates as often because they perceive that conservatives do not appreciate the black perspective – conservative or not.

While I do not share this perception, I do anticipate a few of my conservative friends will take exception to my writing. Oddly, this will provide evidence that they do not appreciate the black perspective.

Some council members may have been thinking to select the “most conservative.” However, there is no heavy lifting in this job. District Court judges adjudicate misdemeanors and traffic violations. Also, odds were that whomever the council selected would have roots in the Democrat Party. Any future decisions by the selectee would be nurtured by their roots.

I think Republicans – a majority on the council – should have selected the candidate who would have gotten the party more conservative votes, not Democratic political favors. As it stands, the Democrats got their candidate without having to vote for him. Democrats can say Republicans voted against highly qualified, more experienced minority candidates. What Democrats did to Republicans is what the black community calls “the Okie-doke.”
